How Multi-Point Works
Multi-point Bluetooth uses the Bluetooth HFP (Hands-Free Profile) for phone calls and A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) for music. The headphone maintains two simultaneous connections. When a call arrives, the HFP profile takes priority and audio switches to the calling device. When the call ends, A2DP resumes on the original device. The switching time varies: Sony XM5 takes 2 seconds, Bose QC Ultra takes 1 second, AirPods Pro 2 takes 0.5 seconds.
Devices That Support Multi-Point
Excellent: Sony WH-1000XM5, Bose QC Ultra, Sennheiser Momentum 4, AirPods Pro 2 (Apple devices only). Good: Soundcore Space Q45, JBL Tune 770NC, Audio-Technica ATH-S200BT. Poor: Cheap Bluetooth adapters and older headphones (Bluetooth 4.0 and below). The rule: Bluetooth 5.0+ is recommended for reliable multi-point.

Here’s my take: multi-point Bluetooth is essential for anyone who uses headphones with both a laptop and phone. The Sony WH-1000XM5 ($349) has the best implementation — fast switching, reliable connection, works with any Bluetooth device. For budget users, the Soundcore Space Q45 ($79) has multi-point that works well enough. Don’t buy headphones without multi-point in 2025 — it’s a standard feature that should be included at every price point.
