Understanding Frequency Response Curves

A frequency response curve shows how a headphone reproduces different frequencies. The Sony WH-1000XM5 has a bass-boosted curve (+3dB at 100Hz). The Sennheiser HD 600 has a flat curve (±2dB). The curve tells you exactly how a headphone will sound — before you buy it. Here’s how to read them.

Reading the Graph

The X-axis shows frequency (20Hz-20kHz). The Y-axis shows amplitude (dB). A flat line (0dB) means the headphone reproduces all frequencies equally — accurate, neutral sound. A line that rises at low frequencies (left side) means boosted bass. A line that rises at high frequencies (right side) means boosted treble. The Harman target curve is a widely accepted “pleasant” frequency response that most listeners prefer.

Common Curve Types

V-shaped: Boosted bass and treble, recessed mids. Fun for pop and EDM but fatiguing for long listening. Bass-forward: Boosted bass, flat mids and treble. Good for hip-hop and electronic. Neutral/Flat: Even response across all frequencies. Best for critical listening and mixing. Treble-rolled: Reduced treble. Smooth and forgiving but less detailed.

My Take

Here’s my take: frequency response curves are the most useful spec when shopping for headphones. Check RTINGS’ measurement database before buying — it has curves for every headphone tested. Choose a curve that matches your music taste: bass-boosted for hip-hop, neutral for classical, V-shaped for pop. Don’t assume “flat = best” — preference is subjective.
