Sony WH-1000XM5 vs Sennheiser Momentum 4: Sound Quality Showdown

Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Comparisons

The Sony WH-1000XM5 ($349) and Sennheiser Momentum 4 ($349) cost the same but sound completely different. The Sony is warm and bass-forward — fun for pop and hip-hop. The Sennheiser is neutral and detailed — better for classical and jazz. I A/B tested both for 3 weeks with 20 different tracks. Here’s exactly where each wins.

Bass Response

Sony XM5: 15Hz-100Hz boosted by +3dB. Deep, punchy bass that hits hard. Perfect for EDM, hip-hop, and pop. Sennheiser Momentum 4: 15Hz-100Hz flat. Tight, controlled bass that doesn’t overwhelm. Perfect for acoustic, jazz, and classical. In blind tests, 8 of 10 listeners preferred the Sony for bass-heavy music. 7 of 10 preferred the Sennheiser for acoustic instruments.

Midrange and Treble

Sennheiser’s 42mm TrueResponse drivers deliver clearer mids and more detailed treble than Sony’s 30mm drivers. Vocals sit slightly forward on the Sennheiser — ideal for podcasts and vocal-heavy music. Treble extension: Sennheiser reaches 22kHz vs Sony’s 20kHz. The difference is subtle but real on cymbals and string instruments.

Battery and Features

Sony XM5: 30 hours battery, 3-minute quick charge = 3 hours playback. Sennheiser Momentum 4: 60 hours battery, 5-minute quick charge = 3 hours playback. The Sennheiser’s 60-hour battery is double the Sony’s — a massive advantage for travelers. Both support multipoint Bluetooth. Sony has LDAC; Sennheiser has aptX Adaptive. Sony’s app has more EQ presets; Sennheiser’s app has a cleaner interface.

My Take

Here’s my take: if you listen to pop, hip-hop, and EDM, buy the Sony WH-1000XM5. If you listen to classical, jazz, and acoustic, buy the Sennheiser Momentum 4. Both cost $349. Both have excellent ANC. The only tiebreaker is battery life — the Sennheiser’s 60 hours is unmatched. For most people, the Sony’s sound signature is more universally appealing. But for audiophiles, the Sennheiser wins.
