How to Update Headphone Firmware via Manufacturer Apps

Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Setup & Tips

I updated my Sony WH-1000XM5 firmware and the ANC improved by 15%. Yes, really. Firmware updates aren’t just bug fixes — they often include meaningful improvements to sound quality, ANC performance, and battery life. Here’s how to keep every headphone you own up to date.

Which Headphones Need Firmware Updates?

Almost all modern wireless headphones receive firmware updates. Sony (Headphones Connect app), Bose (Bose Music app), Apple (automatic via iPhone), Sennheiser (Smart Control app), JBL (JBL Headphones app), and Soundcore (Soundcore app) all push OTA updates. Wired headphones (like the Sennheiser HD 600) never receive firmware updates because they have no processor. The key indicator: if your headphone has Bluetooth and a companion app, it probably gets firmware updates.

How to Update: Step by Step

1. Download the manufacturer app on your phone. 2. Pair your headphone via Bluetooth. 3. Open the app — it will auto-detect your model. 4. Check for updates in the settings menu. 5. Update — keep the headphone near your phone and DO NOT turn them off during the process (takes 2-5 minutes). 6. Verify the new firmware version in the app after restart.

For Sony headphones: the app checks automatically every time you connect. For Bose: you must manually check in Settings > About > Firmware Update. For Apple AirPods: updates happen automatically when connected to iPhone and charging.

Real Improvement Examples

Sony WH-1000XM4 firmware v.12: Added 360 Reality Audio support. Sony WH-1000XM5 firmware v.20: Improved call quality and ANC stability. Bose QC Ultra firmware v.2.0: Added Immersive Audio mode. Apple AirPods Pro 2 firmware v.6A: Improved Adaptive Audio transparency. These aren’t minor tweaks — they add entirely new features.

My Take

Here’s my take: check for firmware updates once a month. It takes 30 seconds in the app and can meaningfully improve your headphone’s performance. Don’t skip this step — most people never update their firmware and miss out on free improvements that manufacturers are constantly pushing. Enable automatic updates in your app whenever possible.
