How to Switch Between ANC and Transparency Mode

Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Setup & Tips

ANC blocks noise. Transparency lets you hear the world. Knowing when to switch between them is the difference between a good ANC experience and a great one. Here’s how to toggle modes on every major headphone brand, and when each mode makes sense.

How to Toggle: By Brand

Sony: Press the ANC button on the right earcup (toggle: ANC → Transparency → Off). Or use the Headphones Connect app for adaptive mode. Bose: Hold the button on the bottom edge (toggle: ANC → Aware Mode → Off). Apple AirPods Pro 2: Long-press the stem (toggle: ANC → Transparency). Or use Control Center. Sennheiser: Tap the right earcup 3 times (toggle) or use Smart Control app. Soundcore: Hold the button on the case (toggle) or use the Soundcore app.

When to Use Each Mode

ANC mode: Commuting on trains/planes, open-office environments, studying. Blocks consistent low-frequency noise. Transparency mode: Walking outdoors (hear traffic), waiting in line (hear your name), conversations with colleagues. Adaptive mode: Best of both worlds — automatically switches based on environment. Sony’s Adaptive Sound Control and Bose’s Aware Mode with Voice Detect are the best implementations.

My Take

Here’s my take: use Adaptive mode whenever available. It eliminates the need to manually toggle — the headphone decides for you. If your headphones don’t have adaptive mode, learn the toggle gesture and use ANC indoors, Transparency outdoors. The key is matching the mode to your environment, not sticking with one setting all day.
