Focal Bathys Review: Luxury Hi-Fi Wireless Headphones

Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Reviews

The Focal Bathys ($999) are the most expensive wireless headphones I’ve tested. And they sound like it. Focal applied their Utopia planar magnetic driver technology to a wireless ANC headphone for the first time. The result is a $999 headphone that sounds closer to a $2,000 wired headphone than any other wireless option. Here’s whether the premium is justified.

Sound Quality: In a Different League

The Bathys uses a 40mm Focal M-shaped dome driver — the same design language as their $5,000 Utopia wired headphones. Frequency response: 50Hz-40kHz. THD: 0.3%. The sound is detailed, spacious, and neutral with exceptional clarity in the treble. I compared the Bathys to the Sony WH-1000XM5 ($349) on Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos — the Bathys resolved every instrument individually while the Sony blended them together. The $650 price difference is audible and meaningful.

ANC and Build

ANC: -30dB (adequate but not class-leading). Focal prioritized sound quality over ANC performance. Build: aluminum and stainless steel construction, leather headband, replaceable earpads. Weight: 350g — heavier than the Sony XM5 (250g) but feels premium. Battery: 30 hours (ANC off), 20 hours (ANC on). USB-C charging. DAC mode: the Bathys includes a USB-C DAC cable for wired hi-res listening — a feature no other wireless headphone offers.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Audiophile-grade sound quality, USB-C DAC mode for wired hi-res, premium build quality, replaceable parts, 30-hour battery (ANC off). Cons: $999 is extremely expensive, ANC is mediocre compared to Sony/Bose, 350g is heavy, no LDAC (aptX Adaptive only), no multipoint Bluetooth.

My Take

Here’s my take: the Focal Bathys ($999) are for audiophiles who refuse to compromise on sound quality. If you want the best wireless headphone sound money can buy, this is it. But for most people, the Sony WH-1000XM5 ($349) offers 80% of the sound quality with better ANC, lighter weight, and $650 savings. The Bathys are a luxury purchase — justified only if sound quality is your absolute #1 priority and money is no object.
