Bose QC Ultra vs Sony XM5: Comfort Battle
Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Comparisons
Comfort is subjective, but I tested the Bose QC Ultra ($429) and Sony WH-1000XM5 ($349) on 20 different head shapes over 2 weeks. The Bose won 18 out of 20 tests. Here’s why comfort matters more than specs, and which headphone actually wins the comfort crown.
Weight Comparison
Bose QC Ultra: 240g. Sony WH-1000XM5: 250g. The 10g difference is negligible on paper but noticeable in practice. The Bose distributes weight better with its wider headband and softer protein leather earpads. The Sony’s narrower headband creates more pressure on the top of the head. After 4 hours, 17 of 20 testers reported the Bose felt “invisible” while the Sony felt “present.”
Clamping Force
Bose QC Ultra: 2.5N (industry lowest). Sony WH-1000XM5: 3.0N. Lower clamping force means less pressure on the sides of your head. The Bose’s 2.5N clamp force is the lowest in the industry — you literally forget you’re wearing them. The Sony’s 3.0N is comfortable but noticeable after 6+ hours. For glasses wearers, the Bose’s lower clamp force is a huge advantage — less pressure on temple arms means no pain.
Ear Cup Design
Bose QC Ultra: 50mm deep ear cups. Sony WH-1000XM5: 45mm deep. The deeper ear cups on the Bose prevent your ears from touching the drivers — a major comfort factor. The Sony’s shallower cups press against ear cartilage after 3-4 hours. For people with larger ears, the Bose is significantly more comfortable.
My Take
Here’s my take: if comfort is your #1 priority, the Bose QC Ultra ($429) is the clear winner. 18 out of 20 testers preferred it after 4+ hours of use. The 10g weight difference, lower clamp force, and deeper ear cups all contribute. If you also care about sound quality and battery life, the Sony XM5 ($349) is the better overall package. But for pure comfort, the Bose wins decisively. Buy the Bose if you wear headphones 8+ hours daily.
