Wireless Earbuds for Running: Nike vs Beats vs Jaybird
Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Comparisons
I ran 100 miles with three different sports earbuds: Nike Run Swims ($159), Beats Fit Pro ($199), and Jaybird Vista 2 ($199). The Beats Fit Pro had the most secure fit (wingtips locked in place). The Nike Run Swims had the best battery (8 hours per charge). The Jaybird Vista 2 had the best sound quality (custom-tuned drivers with EQ app). Here’s which one actually won and why.
Fit Security: Beats Win
The Beats Fit Pro’s wingtip design is the most secure fit I’ve tested on in-ear earbuds. I tested on sprints, HIIT, and trail running — zero slippage. The Nike Run Swims use a standard in-ear fit with three ear tip sizes — adequate for jogging but unreliable for high-intensity intervals. The Jaybird Vista 2 uses a hook-over-ear design that’s secure but bulky. For pure fit security, the Beats Fit Pro is #1.
Sound Quality: Jaybird Wins
The Jaybird Vista 2 uses custom-tuned 9.1mm drivers with a frequency response of 20Hz-20kHz. The Jaybird app offers a 5-band EQ with presets for running, cycling, and gym. Sound is detailed and energetic — perfect for workout motivation. The Beats Fit Pro uses Apple’s H1 chip with spatial audio — sound is bass-forward and fun but less detailed than Jaybird. The Nike Run Swims have basic 10mm drivers with no EQ customization — sound is serviceable but unremarkable.
Battery and Durability
Nike Run Swims: 8 hours per charge + 24 hours case (IPX7 rated). Beats Fit Pro: 6 hours + 24 hours case (IPX4 rated). Jaybird Vista 2: 8 hours + 32 hours case (IPX6 rated). The Nike and Jaybird tie for battery life. The Nike’s IPX7 rating handles swimming; the Jaybird’s IPX6 handles sweat and rain. The Beats’ IPX4 is adequate for gym but not serious outdoor running in rain.
My Take
Here’s my take: the Beats Fit Pro ($199) is the best all-around sports earbud for most runners. The wingtip fit is the most secure, sound is motivating, and Apple ecosystem integration is seamless. If you want better sound quality and don’t mind the bulkier design, the Jaybird Vista 2 ($199) is the audiophile’s choice. Skip the Nike Run Swims ($159) — you’re paying for the swoosh, not better performance. The Beats and Jaybird offer more features at similar prices.
