How to Store Headphones Properly to Extend Lifespan
Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Setup & Tips
I stored my Sony WH-1000XM5 folded in a backpack for 6 months and the headband developed a permanent crease. The fix: replace the headband ($45). But proper storage would have prevented this entirely. Here’s how to store every type of headphone to maximize lifespan.
Over-Ear Headphones
Store flat (unfolded) in a hardshell case. Never store folded for extended periods — the headband metal fatigues and develops permanent creases. If your headphones fold, unfold them before storing. Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. The Sony XM5’s carrying case is excellent for this purpose. For the Sennheiser HD 600 (non-folding), use a headphone stand or store in a box with tissue paper to prevent dust accumulation.
In-Ear Earbuds
Store in the charging case with the lid closed. Clean ear tips and mesh before storing — earwax buildup degrades sound quality over time. Remove ear tips periodically to air-dry the case interior (prevents mold). Keep the case away from heat sources — lithium-ion batteries degrade faster at high temperatures.
Environmental Factors
Humidity: Store below 60% RH to prevent driver membrane degradation. Temperature: Store between 10-25°C. UV exposure: Keep away from direct sunlight — UV damages plastics and fades colors. Magnetic fields: Keep away from speakers and magnets — they can demagnetize headphone drivers over time.
My Take
Here’s my take: proper storage is free insurance for your headphones. A $20 hardshell case extends headphone lifespan by 2-3 years. Don’t throw expensive headphones in a backpack without a case — the headband creasing alone can kill a $300+ headphone in 6 months. Invest in proper storage and your headphones will last twice as long.
