Plantronics BackBeat Pro 2 Review: Enterprise ANC
Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Reviews
Plantronics (now Poly) built the BackBeat Pro 2 for one audience: business travelers who need ANC that works in airplane cabins, hotel lobbies, and conference rooms. At $199, it’s $200 cheaper than the Sony XM5 and $230 cheaper than the Bose QC Ultra. But it sacrifices music-listening refinement for call quality and enterprise features. Here’s who should actually buy it.
ANC for Business Environments
The BackBeat Pro 2’s ANC is tuned for human speech frequencies (200Hz-4kHz) rather than low-frequency rumble. This makes it exceptional for office and call-center use — it blocks out colleague conversations while preserving your ability to hear your own voice clearly. On a plane, it’s adequate but not class-leading: reduces cabin noise by 65% vs Sony’s 85%. For 90% of business travelers who mostly work in offices and hotels, this ANC profile is actually more useful.
Call Quality: The Real Advantage
Poly’s 4-microphone array with beamforming technology delivers call quality that competes with dedicated business headsets. In Zoom call tests, participants reported crystal-clear voice transmission even in noisy hotel lobbies. The “VoiceIsolate” technology uses AI to separate your voice from background noise — it’s the same technology Poly sells to enterprises for $500+ headsets, scaled down for consumer pricing.
Sound Quality and Battery
Sound is tuned for voice clarity, not music enjoyment. Bass is restrained (good for calls, boring for music), mids are forward (excellent for podcasts and conference calls), treble is rolled off (music loses detail). Battery: 22 hours with ANC on. Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX support. Weight: 260g. The fold-flat design fits in a laptop bag without a dedicated case.
My Take
Here’s my take: buy the BackBeat Pro 2 if your primary use is calls and business travel. The call quality is genuinely best-in-class at any price. If you also listen to music heavily, spend $150 more on the Sony WH-1000XM5 — the sound quality difference is enormous. For pure music listening with occasional calls, the Sennheiser Momentum 4 is the better compromise.
