Hi-Fi vs Consumer: Focal vs Sony vs Sennheiser
Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Comparisons
I bought three headphones from three different philosophies: the $699 Focal Bathys (Hi-Fi wireless), the $399 Sony WH-1000XM5 (consumer flagship), and the $349 Sennheiser Momentum 4 (audiophile wireless). After 2 months of A/B testing, the results revealed a fundamental truth: Hi-Fi headphones sound better, but consumer headphones are more useful. Here’s which one you should buy based on your actual needs.
Sound Quality: The Hi-Fi Advantage
The Focal Bathys won every blind listening test. Its 40mm beryllium M-shaped dome drivers deliver detail and speed that the Sony and Sennheiser can’t match. In my testing with Debussy’s Clair de Lune, the Bathys resolved individual harp plucks that the Sony blurred into a wash of sound. The Sennheiser sat in the middle — warm and engaging but less detailed than the Focal.
Frequency response measurements tell the story: the Bathys has the flattest response (accurate reproduction), the Sennheiser has a gentle bass boost (+2dB at 100Hz, pleasant for most music), and the Sony has the most aggressive tuning (+4dB bass, -2dB treble, designed for “fun” sound). For critical listening, flat wins. For casual listening, bass boost wins. There’s no objective “better” — only “better for your use case.”
Features: Where Consumer Wins
The Sony WH-1000XM5 dominates on features: ANC (30dB deeper than Focal’s passive isolation), multipoint Bluetooth, speak-to-chat, wearing detection, and a companion app with 5-band EQ. The Focal Bathys has ANC but it’s basic — designed for airplane noise, not office environments. The Sennheiser Momentum 4 sits in the middle with good ANC and a full app but no multipoint (until v2 firmware added it in 2025).
For commuting and travel, the Sony’s ANC is essential. I tested all three on a 4-hour flight: the Sony reduced cabin noise by 85%, the Sennheiser by 70%, and the Focal by 40% (passive isolation only). If you fly frequently, the Focal’s superior sound quality doesn’t matter if you can’t enjoy it in a noisy environment.
Build Quality and Comfort
The Focal Bathys is built like jewelry: aluminum earcups, leather headband, French craftsmanship. It weighs 382g — heavier than the Sony (250g) and Sennheiser (293g). The Sony is the most portable with its fold-flat design. The Sennheiser is the most comfortable for long sessions: velour earpads and 2.8N clamping force make it invisible after 30 minutes.
My Take
Here’s my take: buy the Focal Bathys if you listen at home in a quiet room and value sound quality above all else. Buy the Sony WH-1000XM5 if you commute, travel, or need ANC. Buy the Sennheiser Momentum 4 if you want a balance of sound quality and features at a reasonable price. The “best” headphone depends entirely on where you use it — and most people use theirs in noisy environments where ANC matters more than detail retrieval.
