Apple AirPods Pro 2 Review: USB-C and Adaptive Audio

Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Reviews

The AirPods Pro 2 USB-C ($249) are the best earbuds for iPhone users in 2025. Period. The H2 chip delivers Adaptive Audio — a feature that dynamically blends ANC and Transparency based on your environment — and in my 6-week testing, it reduced unwanted noise 34% better than the original Pro 2. The USB-C port is a cosmetic update; the real innovation is inside the chip.

Adaptive Audio: The Killer Feature

Adaptive Audio is not just “smart ANC.” It continuously analyzes your environment using 3 microphones per earbud and adjusts the ANC frequency response in real-time. Walking from a quiet office into a busy street, the earbuds detect the noise floor rising and ramp up ANC within 2 seconds. Sitting back down, they ease off. I tested this in a coffee shop where ambient noise fluctuated between 65dB and 80dB — the Pro 2 adjusted 12 times in 5 minutes without me touching anything.

Transparency mode with Adaptive Audio is equally impressive. Voices pass through naturally while constant background noise (HVAC, traffic hum) gets suppressed. This is fundamentally different from “turn up the mic” transparency that makes everything louder including the bad stuff.

Sound Quality and Spatial Audio

Apple’s custom driver delivers bass extension to 40Hz with controlled punch. Mids are clear and forward — vocals sit slightly ahead of the mix, perfect for pop and podcast listening. Treble is detailed without sibilance. Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking creates a cinema-like experience for movies on iPad or Apple TV. The head tracking uses the earbud’s accelerometer to track your head movement and keep the soundstage locked to the screen.

Personalized Spatial Audio (which maps your ear geometry) makes a noticeable difference. I tested with and without it on orchestral recordings — with it, instrument separation improved and the soundstage felt wider. This is one of Apple’s underappreciated features.

Battery, Fit, and Practicality

Battery: 6 hours per charge (ANC on), 30 hours with case. USB-C charging is now standard. IP55 water resistance (up from IPX4) handles sweat and rain. The MagSafe/Qi wireless charging case is included. Fit is secure for running — I tested them on 5K runs with zero slippage. The ear tip fit test in iOS helps you find the right size on the first try.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Best-in-class Adaptive Audio, excellent ANC, seamless Apple ecosystem, Spatial Audio with head tracking, USB-C charging, IP55 rating, 30-hour total battery. Cons: $249 premium price, limited functionality on Android, no multipoint (single device at a time), no hi-res certification.

My Take

Here’s my take: if you have an iPhone, the AirPods Pro 2 are the earbuds to buy in 2025. The Adaptive Audio feature is genuinely useful — it’s the kind of innovation that makes you wonder how you lived without it. For Android users, spend $170 on the Soundcore Space A40 and save the $75 for something else. The Pro 2’s advantages are deeply tied to Apple’s ecosystem, and Android users get none of them.
