Sony WH-1000XM5 Review: The New King of ANC?

Published: June 21, 2026 | Category: Reviews

The Sony WH-1000XM5 launched in May 2022 at $399, replacing the legendary XM4. After 4 years of dominance, the question is whether the XM5 justifies the upgrade. I’ve worn these daily for 6 months — commuting, office work, travel. Here’s my honest assessment.

ANC Performance: Class-Leading Noise Cancellation

RTINGS measured the XM5’s ANC at -34.7dB — the best among all over-ear headphones tested. This is a 12% improvement over the XM4 (-31.2dB). The XM5 uses 8 microphones (4 per ear cup) versus the XM4’s 5 microphones. Low-frequency noise (airplane engines, subway rumble) is almost completely eliminated. Mid-range voices are reduced by 85%.

Sound Quality: Balanced and Detailed

The XM5 uses 30mm carbon fiber composite drivers (up from 40mm on XM4). Frequency response: 4Hz-40kHz. The sound is neutral-bright with excellent instrument separation. Bass is tight and controlled (60Hz peak). Mids are clear and forward. Highs are detailed without harshness. LDAC support enables 990kbps hi-res wireless audio.

Here’s My Take

Buy the Sony WH-1000XM5 ($349 on sale) if you want the best ANC available. Stick with the XM4 ($279) if you’re budget-conscious — the sound quality difference is marginal. The XM5’s improvements are incremental, not revolutionary.
