How to Adjust Headband Fit for Better Comfort

Published: June 25, 2025 | Category: Setup & Tips

My Sony WH-1000XM5 clamped too tightly out of the box. I bent the headband outward by 5mm and the pressure disappeared. Here’s how to adjust every type of headband for maximum comfort — no tools required.

Sliding Headbands (Most Headphones)

Adjust the slider so the earcups sit flush against your ears — not pressing inward (too tight) and not hanging below (too loose). The sweet spot: earcups fully surround your ears without touching the cartilage. Test by shaking your head gently — if the headphones slide, they’re too loose. If you feel pressure on your ears, they’re too tight.

Spring-Loaded Headbands (Beyerdynamic, Sennheiser)

These headbands have a built-in spring that provides clamping force. You can’t adjust the length (no sliders), but you can adjust the clamping force by gently bending the headband outward. Bend 2-3mm at a time — test after each bend. Don’t over-bend or you’ll crack the plastic. The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro benefits from this adjustment — most units arrive with excessive clamp force.

Earpad Adjustment

Rotate earpads so the deeper side faces your ear (the deeper contour matches your ear shape). Swap earpads for larger sizes if the stock ones press against your ear cartilage. Third-party memory foam earpads ($15-25) often improve comfort significantly. The Brainwavz replacement pads for the Sony XM5 are thinner and reduce ear pressure by 30%.

My Take

Here’s my take: most comfort issues are solvable with simple adjustments. Before returning headphones for being “too tight,” try bending the headband and swapping earpads. A $20 pair of replacement earpads can transform an uncomfortable headphone into a comfortable one. Don’t accept discomfort — adjust first, replace second.
