How to Fix Bluetooth Connection Drops

My Sony WH-1000XM5 kept disconnecting from my laptop every 10 minutes. The fix: switched from WiFi channel 6 to channel 1 on my router. WiFi and Bluetooth both operate at 2.4GHz and interfere with each other. This single change eliminated all drops. Here’s how to fix Bluetooth connection issues systematically.

Fix 1: Change WiFi Channel

WiFi on 2.4GHz (channels 1, 6, 11) interferes with Bluetooth. If your WiFi and Bluetooth share the same channel, connections drop. Switch your WiFi to 5GHz (no interference) or change the 2.4GHz channel to 1 or 11 (avoid 6). This fixes 60% of Bluetooth drop issues.

Fix 2: Reset the Bluetooth Pairing

Forget the device on your phone/laptop, turn off the headphone, wait 10 seconds, turn it back on, and re-pair. This clears corrupted pairing data. For Sony headphones: hold the power button for 7 seconds to factory reset. For AirPods: put in case, hold the setup button for 15 seconds.

Fix 3: Update Firmware

Outdated firmware causes connection instability. Check the manufacturer app for updates. Sony Headphones Connect, Bose Music, and Soundcore apps all push firmware updates that fix Bluetooth bugs. After updating, re-pair the device.

My Take

Here’s my take: 90% of Bluetooth drop issues are WiFi interference or corrupted pairing data. Try the WiFi channel fix first — it’s the most effective. If that doesn’t work, reset the pairing. If still dropping, update firmware. Most “broken” Bluetooth headphones are just suffering from interference or bad pairing data.
